DDIA’s Executive Director Joins Chatham House Panel on Brazil’s Role in the BRICS Bloc

Roberta Braga, Founder and Executive Director of the Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas (DDIA), participated as a speaker at Chatham House’s public event, Can Brazil Lead the BRICS to Counter Trump?, held on September 24, 2025, in London and online.

The discussion, chaired by David Lubin, Senior Research Fellow in the Global Economy and Finance Programme at Chatham House, brought together experts to examine how the BRICS bloc, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, might respond to shifting global dynamics and renewed protectionist policies under President Trump’s America First agenda.

Alongside Professor Matias Spektor and Professor Oliver Della Costa Stuenkel from Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), Braga joined the conversation on how Brazil’s diplomacy and leadership could shape the future of multilateralism, trade, and global governance.

The event explored questions such as:

  • How unified are the BRICS countries amid renewed global economic polarization?

  • How are they countering U.S. trade and tariff policies?

  • What role could Brazil play in strengthening the bloc’s cooperation and influence?

The session was attended by Chatham House members, diplomats, policymakers, academics, and journalists, and was livestreamed globally.
